hey, I have an Asrock 4 CoreDual Sata-2 Mobo, with PCI-e and AGP. I recently upgraded to a Geforce 9400gt PCIe card, and now either when I start up windows after having the pc on for a bit, or testing the system with the windows experience index, it switches off with the power LED still on, and I have to turn off the PSU. I'm relatively sure this is either an overheating issue or a PSU failure, but as my previous card (an ATI radeon 2400 pro agp) has the same 300W requirements as the 9400gt, an...

This may be caused by your computer overheating. Has your computer been making much noise lately? You may need to replace a fan in your tower.
Try opening up the tower and then starting up the computer to see if the fans are running properly. If a fan is either no working or if there is one making
unusual noises then I would get a new fan. While the tower is open, I would suggest cleaning the inside by blowing all of the dust our with canned air.
Sometimes collected dust can slow down the ventilation in some areas.

This could be caused by overheating, faulty hardware, new programs or dying power supply.
Check foolakadugie's post just above to see how to deal with overheating.
You should download a utility that monitors voltages and fan speeds etc (for example speedfan) and make sure everything is reporting ok. If you notice a voltage drop or something that pretty much points to your power supply.
How long have you had the computer for? Did it just recently start happening? Did you install any new programs?
If you are 100% sure that you didn't install any programs, your cooling system is fine and your psu is fine then something in your computer must have developed a fault.
The best way to go about this is to send it in to a computer store so they can professionally test what needs replacing.

Good luck

It's very likely the power supply. I face that problem before, just few weeks ago. If you have another pc around, you can try swap the power supply. It usually turn off at peak load, say when doing encoding or saving a big file. For my case, sometime even when booting up. For me, since i know electronic, i open up the power supply and found out that a few capacitors is not in good shape. After replacing them, voila, it's be on until now, for more than 2 weeks. I left my pc on 24x7.

EDIT: The main cause of the problem above is that, there's a voltage dip during the heavy load. If the dip is way of the tolerance of the board, which is usually +/- 5%, then the motherboard will switch off, but holding the power supply on. In my case, the power led is blinking. You can't do anything until you turn off the main power switch to reset the faulty state.

After confirming that it's the power supply problem, you can either send to a known friend or change the capacitor yourself, or just get a new one, it won't be expensive. It's around RM60/= here, equal to less than $20 US dollar.

Nowadays as things is getting cheaper, so is the parts they use. Capacitor has the shortest life span. If you checkout the datasheet, you'll bee surprise that the quoted life span is only a mere few thousand hours. If say it's 3000 hours, If i on 24 hours a day, that's only 125 days.

Good Luck

As the previous posters have said, this may be caused by overheating, faulty hardware, or maybe your fan in giving out. It could also be that you plugged your computer to the wrong electric socket, giving it too much electricty, making it overheat. There are a lot of factors in this problem. It could also be that your RAM (Random Access Memory) is too slow for the programs that you are executing. Maybe upgrading it (RAM) a little bit would work?

Hope what i said helps.

Edit: I suggest using an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) for the CPU and the monitor, but make sure that you plugged the wires in correctly.

I experienced this before, my PC randomly restarts because I installed a software then immediately used it without restarting.
If you installed a new software, try to uninstall it first, reboot, then install your software and restart again. That's what I did and my PC is fine now. Try also to clean your power supply, CPU fan, etc. Make sure also to connect the power supply plug directly to the wall socket and don't plug it to extension wires.

by power supply plug do you mean the one that goes into my computer to power it if you mean that then mines plugged into an extension cable cause i only have one wall socket

I rule out the possibility of RAM and also "wrong electric socket, giving it too much electricity". RAM problem could have just cause the system to restart. As ratchetclan4 has mentioned, "the turn on button won't work until i switch it off from the back and then back on". That means the motherboard turn itself off, mostly due to power dip, it's call brownout in electronic, and to prevent further problem, you need to power off everything to reset the state. This is a safety implementation. The system might have a corrupted RAM data during the brownout, so it's safer to just halt everything. The suggestion of AVR might be a right move. But before buying anything, it's safer to just do a confirmation check, on whether it's the power supply. Unless you have no other way to swap the power supply for a test run, then whatever closer is the next good move.

best way to test is getting speedfan and some kind of cpu test program (like Prime95, S&M, OCCT, CPU-burn, ...). Speedfans allows you to monitor the temperatures and voltages (it can also log these values to a file, which I suggest you to do so you can see the last value recorded). Then start the cpu test program, if the computer immediatly powers down, then it's a faulty psu, if not you should keep an eye on the temperatures and voltages.

How the f**k am I meant to fix this? I've tried everything, freeing space next to the fan, changing power settings for PCIe in windows, updating the BIOS, nothing works. This is really annoying me because a new 9400GT is £30 I don't have and I bought this used off a friend for £10, and my case is WELL COOLED with 7 fans!!

Any help would be appreciated

machine shuts down !!
Computer Turns Self Off

Hi GUYS,

Have 2 pcs with A7V400MX ASUS mainboards - one with sempron & other with athlon xp cpus.    One was in use and other one off mostly. Though was working well last time. Now I realise both machines just shut off after a while on booting. Earlier it used to work for 5 min. Or so now the interval is very short. Barely clears the boot setup screen.

Have tried interchanging the smps , checked all connections. Even reinstalled both cpus . BUT TO NO AVAIL.

thinking its because of the fans having conked out , replaced new fans over the heat sinks. They briefly come on and then board simply shuts it down.

What are the chances of both smps / both cpu fans conking off at the same time. One machine is 3 yr. Old and other a yr younger.

Need guidance ASAP.

 Thanks and Regards,

 Kedar

Hi, I have recently purchased a phenom 9650 quad core with asus motherboard. My computer just turns off (not restart) suddenly for many times. This is not during gaming or something power hungry application. It turns off any time without any warning . Sometimes the machine running smoothly for many hours without any problem but after that the same problem occurs.

another weird problem is that when power goes off (power cuts) my machine turns off without any backup from my ups but I checked my ups with another machine that it is giving almost 8 minutes backup with 17 inch crt monitors.

I suspect that this porblem is related to power supply unit (SMPS) so I send it for service. Can you help me to understand the problem?

I have almost the same problem, my computer turns itself off and powers itself again immediately, this problem happens in a randomly form, it can be after one hour or after seven hours. the only thing that is true is that it happens every day since 2 weeks more or less.

So, after reading all the suggestions posted before i decide to change the power supply to see what happens and unfortunately the problem still happen.

I would appreciate any help.

Best regards,

  25. Adding More IDE Ports In Computer
    (18)
Hi, is there any way I can add more IDE ports to my computer? I'm building a computer from
scratch and it's basically done. Just want to know how I can add more IDE ports since I plan on
adding multiple hard drives to this computer and with the current setup, there will be no more free
IDE ports. I did some searching before posting here and found some users mentioning a PCI IDE
Controller card. I searched online and all I found are ATA/SATA/RAID Controller Cards instead. Are
these the same? I know I had to use a controller card on my older Windows 98 deskto....

go ahead and mention that (keeping in mind the price). I BELIEVE everything is compatible, but I am

  28. Computer Shuts Down - Why?
    Unknown Cause...so stumped! (23)
So I have a brand new computer. Just bought it a couple months ago. It's an Intel 915GAVL
motherboard, 3.0 Ghz HT enabled processor, 1 GB 400Mhz DDR, dual SATA 80 GB hard disks, PCI-e 128 MB
Nvidia Geforce GT 6600 OC, 450w power supply, and running windows XP Professional SP2. I have two
cooling fans, both side panels off, the computer is sitting on top of my desk, and it's in an
air conditioned room with relatively little dust. But it still has problems. For some reason, it
overheats. or that's what i've been told by the service center. already I'v....
  29. My Summer Is Ruined!
    Please help, computer down (8)
Ok, I was playing Age of Mythology on my computer and then suddenly my computer shut down. I had no
idea what happened. Me and my brother opened the CPU (the big rectangle thing) and started to check
each component. When we turn on the computer, there is nothing on the monitor, also, there are no
sounds, and the hard-drive is not spinning (guessing from it's sound). Does anyone know how to
troubleshoot this problelm? Or should I contact a computer-hardware shop for professional help?
Please reply asap, that's my gaming computer, so I really need it bad or else I ....
