Which Text Editor To Choose? - text editor choice for programmers..

I’m in need of some good text editors for development. I have tried notepad++ and crimson editor. I want better text editor with clear features and simple look. My usage is mainly to edit css/php/java and other source files. I want to know if there are other good options for text editor. You can suggest free as well as commercial. Also please let me know why you’re suggesting it. So i can check those features as well.

Personally I use Kate, Code::Blocks and Eclipse, depending on what I'm doing.

Nice and simple, fast and has syntax highlighting. Also integrates well with the KDE desktop. The syntax highlighting works with a range of languages, but you can add more and change the colours to suit yourself.

Code::Blocks - http://www.codeblocks.org/

More of a development environment, containing templates, syntax highlighting, code completion and all sorts of features for loads of languages. Again, you can define your own templates and things to fit your workflow. Definitely worth checking out.

Eclipse - http://eclipse.org/

Fairly similar to Code::Blocks, but with more extensions to provide specific features for each language (such as extensions specifically for PHP). Free, so again worth checking out.

I used eclipse and codeblocks. But for texteditors they're too heavy. I like features of eclipse. But i'm in search of low-resource text-editor. I use kate on linux but whenever it comes to windows based work and no option of linux arround. Then it's of no use. I'm in search of cross-platform still low-resource taking text editor. Any suggestion ?

For a simple text editor with quite rich features you can use Notepad2, I use it for a lot of years and it seems to be updated by the author quite often, even though I use it as an alternative to Microsoft Windows Notepad, I made it the default viewer for .txt .ini .sql and etc. files just to see what's inside, it looks good, works well has a lot of needed functions/features and is very light, it does not require any installer, just unzip to your program files, make it your default or whatever text viewer/editor.

For more powerful tool if lets say talking about web development, you can use PHP Designer 7, read more about it here: http://www.mpsoftware.dk/ [it's not free for several years now, but also is not expensive if you're a student]

I use it for a long time and am used to it for PHP development, since PHP Designer 2008 it got really good for web development, because lets say the free version 2006 was a bit slow in some situations, now that's all fixed and runs smoothly.

Notepad2 looks good, it is lightweight and works well with the files. I have found links to programmer's notepad software on notepad2 site. It is available here. It is good and worth to try. Support for multiple source files is also there. Other than that i downloaded pspad, which is for windows only.It makes use on synedit plugin. And it supports many source files. You can take a look at pspad here. It is freeware text editor and many plugins are available for it. It also has FTP client in it. So i'm checking these two as of now. I'll update thread as i try many others.
