Hi, I recently installed RealVNC so that I can look after a remote computer on my network. I have installed the server on computer a and the client on computer b! The server is running in service mode and has been setup with a password for authentication.
My first problem comes when I try to connect from B to A. I get different errors messages including Connection Timed Out and Connection Refused. I have unblocked the ports on windows firewall (ports 5920 and 5820 (thats what im using)) and opened a series of ports on my router to allow access. Using command prompt and netstat -a I found that the computer is using the port 5920.
Whats strange is that when i add a client on the server computer (A) and have the listening client open on B, it connects! i get a dialog window and can see the other computer. But when i try to connect from B to A, it wont work!
When i attempt to connect with the Java viewer on port 5820 i get the VNC logo and a java prompt. It then says which computer do you want to connect to i click ok, it asks for the password then I get a
have you enabled the 'vnc Password authentication' option ? Forgetting to add the port at the end of the destination computer could cause problems to. So if computer a has 192.168.10.1 as IP adres, then you should type 192.168.10.1:5920 in the box of the vnc viewer.
You could also try adding computer B to the 'Access Controll' list (it's on the second tab of the VNC server properties window).
I have tried that and get an error - connection reset by peer, the connection was closed unexpectedly and connection aborted (10053). These errors come up almost instantly after i click ok for the password. as soon as i click reattempt, another error comes back up!

I'm not that sure of RealVNC, but tightVNC, require 2 colon, as in 192.168.10.1::5902, cause it's [ip]:[display]:[port].
But the error looks like firewall or router forwarding problem.
Also, i found out that service mode don't usually work as expected. Maybe you should try to use non service mode first, and see if it works. For service mode to works properly, i think (just plain guessing) it need WinXP Pro, cause it failed when i tried on WinXP Home.
Sounds like an odd problem!! ok maybe I have an odd solution for it then, I use VNC a lot here and I once did have some odd connection errors like this, for some reason it wouldnt connect a-b but b-a was fine..both firewalls were "trusted" and ports open and fine cos the link from b-a wouldnt have worked..it seemed to work fine again when I let it use the Windows system name instead of the IP..in the vnc connection box "housepc" instead of 192.168.2.10:5902 Maybe just give that a go, I guess the pcs are all on the same Workgroup? or domain?
thanks! i tried the double colon trick, didn't work. I have also tried using the computer name as they are in the same workgroup - that didn't work either! So i have now switched to tightVNC, and it works fine! and its free and open source!

Did it works well in service mode? Even left at the welcome or login screen for the server pc.
Yeah, im running tightVNC as a service and I am able to use the welcome screen to login and logout users fine! I havent tried connecting while the computer is already on the login screen as hasn't been logged in yet while its been on though.

I was having this issue for quite some time before discovering that if I change the default color scheme to "full color", afterwards it worked perfectly.

hey everyone...i was wondering if someone could help me with a problem we were trying to hook up a
computer to my home network and realized that the network on the computer was a domain while the
rest of ours at home were on a workgroup. so, i had the computer join my home work group instead of
it's previous domain. the join was successful but once the computer restarted, we can now no
longer log onto that computer! is there anyway to bypass the network logon? my father has
extremely important work files on that computer, and we cannot log on! i tried canceling ou....
So my question is this, I have a desktop pc connected to the net through a wired modem. I also have
a free (as in not used) wireless network adapter build in to the desktop pc which I want to share
with a laptop. The goal is to have a live internet connection on the laptop. What are the steps I

issues about networking my PC with the MAC at home through a Modem+wireless router. I have been
using a normal DSL modem since i switched to broadband 5 years ago. A Lucent Cell Pipe 20A USB. I
finally decided i needed to change my modem because firstly the drivers werent updated any more and
secondly the product is discontinued. I bought a new Wireless ADSL2 + Modem router. This is what i
was told to buy as i had no idea of what i needed for the upgrade. Its a NETGEAR DG834G....
Hi, I have a router at home and I installed RealVNC on it. At first, my IP address (the one that
showed up when I hovered my mouse over the RealVNC icon in the system try) was different than IP
address that came up when I ran the "VNC server test page". So like the documentation said on the
RealVNC website, I setup port forwarding on my router and tried again but I still have two different
IP addresses on my computer at home. I tried both IPs but the viewer keeps giving me the same error
message every time I try to connect "unable to connect to host: Connection timed ....

the internet via dial-up and has a printer connected to it. My computer has no internet connection,
but has many graphics programs and things that I would like to transfer the the internet connected
computer. I had the computers networked when I had highspeed internet and a cable modem, but

Hi all, i have just recently upgraded my home network to a wireless connection. I have a older
laptop (maybe 2 years) that doesn't have a built in wireless lan. i am trying to work out what i
should do for a wireless lan adapter. Should i get a USB connector or a PCMCIA card? i borrowed a
friends PCMCIA card and put it into my laptop so see how the range was! it was really, really bad!
my friend also lent me his psp to test the signal sstrength. The PSP could get 100% strength while
the PCMCIA card could get nothing. does this mean that the PCMCIA cards are bad? al....
I have 3 PC's all XP, networked. All 3 have internet access and are part of the same work
group. PC #1 can access shared folders on PC#2 and PC#3. PC #2 can only access shared folders on

Just bought a new Laptop and would like to configure it to connect to my PC for File Sharing and

Since I haven't had any luck with my internet connection sharing problem which i posted
previously, due to the terrible quality of service here, i've decided a second connection may be
the answer. I won't give up the cable because i also have 2 phone lines on it, plus cable tv,
but I will get a 256K DSL connection in addition to my 128K cable. The benefits of this will be that
it's double, plus i'll get the full 256K connection for myself without having to share it

What Im looking to do: Hook up 2 computers (one upstairs and one down) and my xbox live. 1) Is
wireed networking significantly faster than normal networking? 2) Can't you get special adapters
and have your network only give info through those (to prevent network hacking)? 3) With wireless
networking would you have to buy adapters for each computer - I think some wireless routers require
it. 4) If I would need those how would that work with xbox live? 5) Any other info on these sorts of

I'm trying to set up a small home network between two computers. I have SUsE linux on one
computer, and XP pro on the other. I believe I have the hardware end sorted out, but I am having
much trouble with the set-up of the network devices. on the linux machine, it is asking for an IP
address for the computer. I don't know what I should put, can someone clue me in? On the XP
machine, it is trying to renew my IP address, but it will not renew it. It than says that it has

I recently purchased myself an XBox, but now I find myself in a pickle trying to get it networked up
without having to take it and set it by the router everytime I want to get on Live. The situation
is that there's two phone jacks in the entire house, neither of which by where I desire the XBox
to live, the router, Netgear WGR614v4, is hooked up to one and the computers all connect to it
wirelessly. I'm done trying to figure out a way to get it to work without buying any more
