It has been a while since I have used a Mac. I used it at one of my design jobs. It was like a G6... it was quite a few years ago. But I did like using it for Photoshop.  Your dad is probably having issues with that computer because it's using Windows Vista. No one said it was a stable OS...heck even Windows XP is not 100% stable. But I'm sure if he goes back to using Windows XP, it will be much better in terms of performance and using other programs that he's having compatibility issues with. The war will never end between these two operating systems (Mac and Windows). I personally am a Windows user but love how the Mac works. Simplicity is one word that comes to mind. But for those who have been a long time Windows user (like me), converting will not be as simple. For your every day newbie user to computers in general, if they have to start off using a computer, I do recommend the Mac over Windows. Better yet, get one of the newer Macs where it will run Mac and Windows (using Bootcamp). The "better" or two worlds in one computer  Yep. The MacOS code does seem to have some *nix code in it, which is why it's very robust for the most part when compared to Windows. Unix is a very old operating system, but when you want stability and better performance, I think it's hands down one of the best operating systems to use.
I know a ton of people who run some pretty serious software and hardware on vista and love it. Others hate it. Similarly I know alot that love macs and alot that hate macs. Hardware and operating systems will be a battle that is probably never ending as long as we're given the choice especially since people like a variety of things. Windows, *nix, MacOS, all of them have pros and cons regardless of what you want to admit. Windows has more commercially supported software, *nix has more power and flexibility, macos does what it does very well, but has some limits in the realm of software variety.
True, I just recently got my first Mac since I've been dying for one since 8 years ago when I was 8. I finally got one after my new HP bricked on my 3 times (3 separate laptops). With no better alternative, I made the fateful leap by smacking down double the price to get the Mac. A bit less features, but got what I wanted, a Mac with MacOS X, and a great machine.
Macs are gaining a lot of grip at my school, with the laptop segment almost 60% PC - 40% Mac (of all people who uses their laptops at school, not counting ones at home). It's most popular amongst the grade 9 and 10s. Not so much the older grades. However, the trend is shifting to have the whole school. If I split that estimate even further, Apple overtook HP and Acer in one school year. People say it's just the Intel processor. I say it's because Apple finally nailed the correct laptop solution, but it so happens to have an Intel chip instead of the great PowerPC chip, which I'm still disappointed that they ditched it. They were so close to closing a deal with P.A. Semi to produce the next generation PowerPC chip that ran at about only 25W TDP (desktop, dual core). xboxrulz
Thats the thing though Mac computers have been a been a huge deal in schools for the last 10+ years, of course when you get a used outdated one they are fairly cheap then getting a brand new computer. For me though I have hated mac computer since the 1990 with the constant crashing and BWONG sound repeating itself over and over when it does crash. Of course the one thing Mac computers are having a problem on is playing games though, and although I have been out of touch on what Mac's can do, their set up could never play that many games, So has that change or are most Mac computers limited to what games can still be played on it?
The only thing I know Mac are good for is heavy duty multimedia designing, I believe pixar uses Mac computers for their movies.
EA has announced that starting with Command & Conquer 3, Need for Speed: Carbon, Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix, Battlefield 2142, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 and Madden 08; that they will simultaneously launch with PC versions during WWDC 2007 (as what I've heard).

Yep! That's true. I've been playing Command & Conquer 3. It's my first game for my iMac 17" (old version). It's fun to play but sometimes it's lagging. Moreover, mac game need more specifications and space compare with windows.

But I don't love hate one PC or Mac over another, I just like that there is competition between many good systems, and sometimes you can get really good deals for one, due to the expansion or upgrades of another OS. I say keep it coming, but be careful of the 'lemons' out there... my good friend bought a Dell around a year ago, and it kept dying on him... I think that Mac computers are a great thing. The security is excellent and I've heard that the support is much better than most computer manufacturers, although I'm 99% satisfied with the support from Dell. If I got a Mac, I would need to learn how it works thoroughly and reteach my parents how to use computers. I do use Safari and RocketDock to simulate a Mac though, they are quite nice.
Since Mac is based on UNIX, it is somewhat similar to Linux, although I'm not sure to what extent. Things that I would miss in Macs would be running security scans and similar tasks (Windows Update, etc) because they aren't necessary on a Mac. I also do not like the ease of use that Macs have. They claim that you can do amazing "multimedia" things in simple clicks, I do not necessarily like that. 1 thing that I have always pondered about was that can Macs actually run certain tools to write HTML (not WYSIWYG editors, but advanced text tools like Notepad++ or something similar). And of course there is this one thing in Windows Vista that isn't present on Macs, my favourite system setting, the User Account Control. I'm dying to get Windows Vista just to experience User Account Control. It sounds very exciting, and I'd love to see the prompts pop up asking for my password. Of course there is a similar thing in Ubuntu, but it just isn't the same. All in all, Macs are excellent. For new users, they can get acquainted to Macs pretty easily I think, but for the Windows user, adaptation may be a bit difficult to follow through. True and not true, you can be only be careful with viruses, but Windows machines are very easy to puncture through when it comes to other aspects of security like a hacker attack and running exploited code. On Mac, you can be intruded, but it takes a lot more steps and countermeasures to puncture through. Even if you did, you won't be able to touch any system files until you figured out the password. xboxrulz

What I'm trying to say is that I've had a windows machine for six years and don't even run Anti-virus software on it. I don't need to because I'm just careful. So for people like your dad the mac might be the way to go, but for a savvy user, there is nothing wrong with windows.
