Free Ringtones For LG VX8100 - How to load ringtones on your VX8100

If you are like me and whenever you get a new "toy" you have to hack it, or if you just want free ringtones and not have to pay Verizon an outrageous amount of money to use their Get It Now service, then this tutorial was made for you.

Needed Software
BitPim 0.36

Bluetooth or Cable
Since the VX8100 is Bluetooth enabled you have a choice to make, you can buy a data cable to connect your phone to the computer with, or you can buy a Bluetooth adapter. Personally I would go with the Bluetooth adapter if your computer doesn't already support Bluetooth because I can use other bluetooth devices with my computer as well as my phone. Like for instance when I am playing Delta Force, I can use my Bluetooth earpiece in conjunction with Roger Wilco and talk to my squad-mates hands free while I'm blowing the other team to kingdom come. Allthough the data cable setup is quite similar I'm sure, I will not post a section in this tutorial on how to setup the data cable because I don't use one and rather than seem like an idiot and be of no help, I will just leave it out and explain what I know how to do.

Bluetooth Setup
If you bought the bluetooth adapter and have it installed I will walk you through setting your computer up to connect with your phone. First you need to make your phone visible to the Bluetooth network, to do this goto the menu on your phone, then Settings & Tools, then Bluetooth, and choose My Visibility and set it to "Shown To All". Now work quickly because it will only be visible for three minutes. Next you right-click on the Bluetooth icon in your System Tray, then click Bluetooth Setup Wizard. Then you choose the option "I want to find a specific Bluetooth device and configure how this computer will use its services." Your computer will then scan the area for your phone. Click on the "LG VX8100" device and click Next. You will be asked by both the computer and the phone to pair the device with the computer, use "0000" as the passcode on both. You will want to enable all services "Audio Gateway, Bluetooth Modem and Bluetooth Serial Port" by clicking the checkbox next to them and pushing Finish. Remember which COM port you set for the Bluetooth Serial Port connection, you will need it later.

Phone Setup
Once you have paired the phone with the computer you need to set it to use the Bluetooth connection for data transfer, to do this goto the Bluetooth menu in Settings & Tools on your phone and click "Paired Devices." You should see your computer name in the list, go to it and push "Set Port." This will enable your phone to communicate with your computer over Bluetooth. You are done with your phone for now so you can flip it shut and keep it within 30 ft. of your computer.

Computer Setup
Now comes the fun part, right click the Bluetooth icon in your System Tray and click "Quick Connect" and goto "Bluetooth Serial Port." Find your device name in the menu list and click it, you should then see a window giving you the status on the connection attempt, if all goes well you should get a success message. Next open up BitPim and you should see a configuration window, set your phone model to "LG VX8100 (Verizon)" and configure it to use the COM port you set earlier. These should be the only options you need to change.

Loading Ringtones and Wallpapers
Once you have configured BitPim you will see the main window with a list of tabs going across the top, two of which are "Wallpapers" and "Ringers." This is pretty self-explanitory I would think, and loading the ringtones and wallpapers is fairly simple, just drag and drop the files into the BitPim window that you want to load, or you can click the "Add" button and browse for it.

Advanced Access
Be very careful with this option, you can really screw up your phone if you don't know what you are doing and I am not responsible for it if you do.
If you want access to the EFS file-system on your phone click View and then Filesystem and a new tab will appear called "Filesystem." When you click on it you will see all the files on your phone, below are some useful locations.

File Locations
/brew/16542/lk/mr/ is where your ringtones are stored.
/brew/16542/mp/ is where your pictures are stored.
/brew/16542/ms/ is where your recorded sounds are stored.
/brew/16542/mf/ is where your videos are stored.
/mmc1/ is your MiniSD card.
/nvm/nvm/ is your non-volitile memory where all your IMPORTANT data is stored so be careful with this one.

Good Luck and Happy Ringing
I hope I covered everything in this tutorial, but if I missed anything please PM me about it and I will cover it. The only thing I can't stress enough is that you must be very careful with the file-system of your phone. I had to take two phones back to Verizon and get new ones because I accidentally did something I shouldnt have. And I know what I'm doing, and I still messed up, be careful, and dont say it's my fault if you fry your phone.
