Firefox On Os X Versus Safari - Does Firefox still lock up regularly?

evought
I currently use Safari for most browsing on OS X just because of stability. Firefox was able to decipher more sites correctly, but would frequently lock up (under 10.4.3), spike my processor, flood my bandwidth, and need a Force Quit. From posts in various forums at the time, this was not unusual and due to a networking bug.

Question is, with new versions of OS X (10.4.5) and Firefox, is it stable? Are other people still experiencing this problem?

I have a Mac OS X 10.4.5, and I don't have any problem with Firefox. Did you install some bad extensions? What sites were you browsing when it froze?

Maybe you could try using Firefox 2.0 when it comes out. Or, you can download the Alpha version of it now (intended for testers only).

This was a network bug that happened with certain ISPs (firewall/router combos). Some people were completely unafected. For others, it would spike the CPU and lock on page loads (any). I just wanted to see if anyone playing with newer versions was still having this problem. It was particularly annoying on gov't sites with large forms where you would lose what you had entered when the browser locked.

I guess the other reason I have been holding out a little on going back to Firefox is the lack of keychain support. Firefox has a plugable password storage system but no one has (to my knowledge) written a plugin for OS X keychain and I haven't had time to figure it out myself yet.

Other than the lack of keychain support and the lock-ups, Firefox has been consistently better at standards compliance and page display, especially with javascript. I can never get the TinyMCE editor to work in Safari but do not have any problems in Firefox, for instance.

Odd, the issue I am getting now (OS X 10.4.6, Firefox 1.5.0.3) is that every so often Firefox will stop accepting keyboard input. It has happened three times so far and every time I have to quit and restart. It only started with the .3 update. So far no one else has reported it. Oh well.

I am using Firefox as my main browser now. It is annoying having to copy passwords over one by one from my keychain, but I think it is worth it. I rather like the Colorful Tabs and Download StatusBar extensions.

I didn't really like Safari because it's just Konqueror's engine with better interface.

Hey, I have that problem sometimes too, but on my Windows. Sometimes when I try to type in the Google Toolbar, it won't do anything at all. I'll have to click somewhere else a couple of times before the search box works again. Is your problem in the whole Firefox or just in one extension?

It happens anywhere in the browser, but nine times out of ten it is in the search bar. It seems to be always a single line text entry box that starts the trouble.

odd, maybe it's just how it was installed. I don't know. It never happens to me on Linux though...
