Filezilla: How To Use In cPanel?

lonebyrd
O.K., I've seen the posts on which are the best free FTP clients and I decided to pick Filezilla. I've downloaded it, and read a bunch of stuff here on astahost on how to use FTP. But the one thing I can't seem to find, is how to get the program I downloaded to my Cpanel. I saw NilC (I think that was it) pinned post at the beginning of this section, but, it was for some other program.

I tried saving Filezilla to my computer and running the .exe, getting all the files from it. From there, I went to the Cpanel, and uploaded the Filezilla application to the public_html folder. After that, I went to FTP Manager and added a new FTP account with my name, password, unlimited quota, and after where it says 'public_html' I put Filezilla.exe.

When I tried it out by typing in ftp.ftv.astahost.com I got an FTP folder error. It said
QUOTE
Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder
Under that it has a bunch of 220 numbers but the last one is a 421 and says 'Unable to set up secure anonymous FTP'

I probable went about it all wrong. But if someone could tell me the right way I'd greatly appreciate it. Using an FTP client would be so helpful for me.

Ok the problem seems to be that your trying to connect without the user name and password that you use to connect to your cpanel. From what I remember, and its been awhile since I used FTP to upload anything to my site, you cannot connect anonymously via FTP. This is do to security issues, so just try to log on with your cpanel username and password. That should fix your issue, if it doesn't please post here, if it does or doesn't, and I will download Filezilla and see what it takes to connect and post the way to fix your problem.

I didn't even get a chance to log on anywhere. That's what it sounded like to me too, but it never gave me any option. As soon as I typed in ftp.ftv.astahost.com in the address bar, that is what it said to me. Is there something wrong with how I got Filezilla to my Cpanel, by any chance.

@lonebyrd : I think you missed something.
You don't need to install Filezilla on the Astahost server.
In order to use ftp with Astahost, like with any other computer, you need three things :
1) A ftp server up and running server-side. The ftp server is already running at Astahost, you don't need to do anything more at Astahost-side.
2) A ftp client on your pc, Filezilla is a good choice. However, for testing purposes, the "ftp" command imbedded in Microsoft Windows is enough.
3) a ftp account and password. Login to your Astahost Cpanel, and check your ftp settings. Probably your ftp server address is yourname.astahost.com, your ftp account is yourname and your ftp password is secret.
Now, everything is setup. So, in order to connect, with Filezilla as with any other ftp client, you have to provide
- your ftp server name, you just remember it's probably ftp.yourownname.astahost.com
- your ftp user name
- your ftp password

And that's all !
Don't try to install Filezilla at astohost side, you will simply waste your disk space.

Regards

Yordan

Eureka! I took Filezilla off Cpanel like you said Yordon. I looked in to the FTP manager and got all the information for logging in to FTP, then went to Filezilla. After putting in the FTP site name, my username, password, and port number, I was good to go! It was so easy to do, I don't know why I was so confused.

So now the only problem you should encounter is when the astahost server is down, which is not very often, but it does happen. I know I have had this happen, and just came back later and then it worked. I love FileZilla even have FileZilla FTP server on my local PC (comes with XAMPP) but don't use it but have used the mercury mail server which is not that easy to set up but fun to play around with.

Filezilla: How To Use In cPanel?

I'm trying to upload my website using FileZilla. It says Transfer Complete and Directory listing successful, but then when I go to my website it says that it was uploaded incorrectly. Any idea what the problem could be? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Running With Scissors
Please don't double post.
Sounds like the files are being uploaded to the wrong place or something went wrong during the downloading process. The first step would be to delete the files on your website and try to reupload them. If it still doesn't work it maybe your connection. Try just uploading them using c-panels file manager.
I was having problems just lke this a few weeks ago when trying to upload a smf forum. The problem for me was the ftp connection was bad because it kept breaking. So I just used the c-panel file manager and it worked fine.
Hope this helps.

That's ritht. With Filezilla, you should not forget to first go to the www folder, which is the root for the hosted website.
First go to www, then create a folder.
