Hi before we start please dont double post as we can all see the topic once it is posted. But the best thing to do if you would like to learn how to edit photos of any kind would be to acquire decent software and i have read a few posts here that recommend GIMP which is open source but if you can afford to get photoshop i suggest you do so because this is excellent for editing images and there are an endless number of tutorials teaching you stepp by step with illustrations about the ins and outs of photoshop. A few places i can recommend would be http://www.pixel2life.com or http://www.good-tutorials.com and use the search engine to narrow your choices down. so i hope this helps to get you started and if its not photoshop you are delaing with then please post your program you are using to do this editing as i am sure many others here at astahost can assist you.

Good Luck

Another possibility, depending on what you're trying to do, is using a program called "Persistance Of Vision" (POV for short). It is great if you are looking for 3d graphics, or if you aren't good with drawing. It can be gotten at http://www.povray.org/ and if you want to see what I did, take a look at http://www.yungblood.com/arnig.jpg to see a cartoon alligator. Scenes are built using a "scene language". You type in what you want, then you render the picture. It is similar to programming in that sense. one of the great things about it is that you don't have to do each picture seperately. Once you build a character that you like, you can copy it and modify the copy. For instance, to move arnie's arm in my picture, all I would have to do is change a few numbers.

To give you an idea of how easy it is, it only took me about 4 hours to create arnie. Sure, 4 hours may sound like a long time, but don't let that scare you. You have to take into consideration the fact that I was using an old computer (300MHz) that took about 5 minutes each time I rendered the picture. Also, I was just learning how to use the program.

I'm even writing a program to help animate characters in POV.

Couple of ways of going... One, you could take a photo, import it into Photoshop, and either using a mouse, or a Wacom (or any other brand, but I use Wacom Intuos 3) drawing tablet hooked up to your PC and draw on a layer above the photo, so you are essentially "drawing" the photo, but everything is correctly proportioned. It'd be a good start for getting used to drawing on a computer. I can't draw for crap in the "real world," but on a PC I don't do too bad a job.

Another one that can be handy (also using photoshop) is using the "Stamp" filter (with some tweaks). You get a pure black and white photo that can be very cool looking if done correctly.

Here's a sample of a graphic novel I started (but never finished) based on an internet radio series Tales from the Afternow...

This uses the "Drawing over photo" technique in the first majority of the comic, but the last frame I worked with the Stamp filter and drew based on that... Overall, not professional, but a nice alternative anyway.
